– IGMR

Historical Data: In Catholic churches, the platform used for readings and homilies is called an ambo. Despite this name, it looks much more like the lectern than the ambo used in oriental rites. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (IGMR) specify that: “ 309. The dignity of the word of God requires that there be a suitable place in the church for its proclamation and to which, during the liturgy of the word, the attention of the faithful will spontaneously converge. In principle, this place should be a stable ambo and not just a mobile shelf. As far as the church architecture allows, the ambo is arranged so that ordained ministers and readers can be easily seen and heard by the faithful. Only the readings, the responsorial psalm and the paschal preconium are spoken of the ambo. The homily can also be made from the ambum and the intentions of universal prayer can be proposed. The dignity of the ambo requires that only the minister of speech rise to him. It is advisable that a new amber, before being destined for liturgical use, be blessed according to the rite that comes in the Roman Ritual.” – IGMR
