Historical Data: Angels (from Latin angelus and Greek ángelos (ἄγγελος), messenger), are heavenly and spiritual beings, God’s servants like men, who serve as God’s helpers or messengers. They live in the spiritual realm, which is a level of existence above the physical universe. The Bible calls this domain heaven. In common iconography, angels usually have bird wings, a halo and have a delicate beauty, emanating a strong glow. Sometimes they are represented as a child, for their innocence and virtue. Biblical accounts and Christian hagiography tell that angels were often the authors of miraculous phenomena and the current belief in this tradition is that one of their missions is to help humanity in its process of approaching God. Angels have been present in the history of mankind since the creation of the world, they are the ones who close the earthly paradise, they are the ones who lead the people of God, they announce famous births, they indicate important vocations, they are the ones who assist the prophets. It was an angel who announced to Gideon that he must save his people; an angel announced the birth of Samson, the angel Gabriel instructed Daniel, although here he is not called an angel, but “the man Gabriel”. This same heavenly spirit announced the birth of St. John the Baptist and the incarnation of Jesus. The angels announced the message to the shepherds, and the most glorious mission of all, to strengthen the King of Angels in his Agony in the Garden of Olives. In the Gospels they appear in the childhood of Jesus, in the temptations of the desert, in the consolation of Gethsemane, they are witnesses of the Lord’s Resurrection, they assist the Church that is born and the Apostles, they prepare the Last Judgment and separate the good from the bad. Jesus’ whole life was surrounded by the worship and service of the Angels. From the Incarnation to the Ascension they followed him. Sacred Scripture says that when God “introduced the Firstborn into the world, it says,” All the Angels of God adore you. ” Some theologians think that this motivated the fall of the evil angels, for not accepting to worship God Incarnate in the human form.
