Dados Históricos: No séc. IV, quando o cristianismo começou a se difundir, muitos místicos partiram para o Deserto em busca de uma existência casta como a de Cristo. Os grupos de ermitões trajavam túnicas de cor preta que é um símbolo da morte e da renúncia. No séc. XI, quando o papa Gregório VII (1020-1085) passou a exigir seu uso, a batina preta já era o traje habitual dos padres. Na ocasião, o papa regulamentou o emprego de cores segundo a hierarquia do clero. Em 1962 a batina preta deixou de ser obrigatória. A cor preta da batina é usada pelos padres. As batinas devem conter geralmente 33 botões de cima abaixo, representando a idade de Cristo, e cinco botões nos punhos, que representam as cinco chagas de Cristo, porém isso não é uma regra, como é o caso desta batina.

XI, when Pope Gregory VII (1020-1085) started to demand its use, the black cassock was already the usual dress of the priests.
