Dados Históricos: O vitral surgiu no Oriente por volta do século X. Foi amplamente utilizado na Europa durante a Idade Média na ornamentação de igrejas e catedrais. Foi durante o Império Bizantino que os vitrais ganharam em beleza e cores. As igrejas bizantinas eram repletas de lindos vitrais. O efeito da luz do sol que penetra através dos vitrais confere uma maior imponência e espiritualidade ao ambiente, efeito reforçado pelas imagens retratadas, em sua maioria cenas religiosas. Eram usados, na Idade Média, como recurso didático para o ensino do catolicismo a uma população inculta e analfabeta.

The effect of sunlight that penetrates through the stained-glass windows gives greater ambience and spirituality to the environment, an effect reinforced by the images portrayed, mostly religious scenes. They were used in the Middle Ages as a didactic resource for teaching Catholicism to an uneducated and illiterate population.
