Dados Históricos: São Luiz Gonzaga, nasceu em 9 de março de 1568, em Roma, Itália. Seu nome de batismo era Castiglione delle Stiviere. Primogênito, filho de um príncipe do Sacro Império chamado Ferrante Gonzaga. Seu pai era um nobre comandante do exército imperial, que detinha o título de “Marquês de Castiglione”. Este era irmão do Duque de Mântua e herdeiro do feudo de Castiglione. Quando tinha apenas dez anos, ele foi enviado à cidade de Florença para servir como pajem do grão-duque da Toscana. A partir desse momento, Castiglione decidiu fazer um voto perpétuo de virgindade. Serviu como pajem do filho do rei dom Filipe II, na Espanha durante alguns anos. Nesse tempo, procurou e conseguiu estudar filosofia na Universidade de Alcalá. Nas horas vagas, dedicava-se à oração e às leituras espirituais. Com 14 anos e ainda na Espanha, Luis recebeu a primeira comunhão das mãos de um santo: São Carlos Borromeu. Tocado pelas palavras do santo e pela força da Eucaristia, Luis sentiu o grande chamado de sua vida. Neste momento ele decidiu se tornar religioso ingressando na Ordem dos Jesuítas. Castiglione delle Stiviere entrou no noviciado da Companhia de Jesus em Roma. Neste ato, assumiu o nome de Luiz Gonzaga, renunciou ao seu título de nobreza e à herança a que tinha direito. Seu mestre nesse tempo foi São Roberto Belarmino. Luis Gonzaga deixou de lado sua origem nobre, escolhendo sempre os serviços mais humildes. Por motivos de estudo, São Luís Gonzaga precisou ir para Roma no ano de 1590. Ao chegar lá, deparou-se com as vítimas de uma doença contagiosa chamada tifo. Ao ver o sofrimento do povo, compadeceu-se de tal forma que passou a ajudar os doentes. Depois de um tempo cuidando dos doentes como podia, ele próprio contraiu a doença e veio a falecer em 21 de junho de 1591. São Luís Gonzaga tinha apenas 23 anos e entregou sua vida em favor da caridade e da pureza de coração. Por isso, São Luís Gonzaga é o padroeiro da juventude e dos estudantes. Seus restos mortais foram sepultados na Igreja de Santo Inácio, fundador da ordem Jesuíta, em Roma.

Historical Data: Saint Luiz Gonzaga, was born on March 9, 1568, in Rome, Italy. His Christian name was Castiglione delle Stiviere. Firstborn, son of a prince of the Holy Empire called Ferrante Gonzaga. His father was a noble commander of the imperial army, who held the title of “Marquis de Castiglione”. This was brother of the Duke of Mantua and heir to the fief of Castiglione. When he was only ten years old, he was sent to the city of Florence to serve as page of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. From that moment, Castiglione decided to take a perpetual vow of virginity. He served as page of the son of the king Dom Filipe II, in Spain for some years. In that time, he sought and managed to study philosophy at the University of Alcalá. In his spare time, he dedicated himself to prayer and spiritual readings. At the age of 14 and still in Spain, Luis received his first communion from the hands of a saint: São Carlos Borromeu. Touched by the saint’s words and the strength of the Eucharist, Luis felt the great call of his life. At this point he decided to become a religious by joining the Order of the Jesuits. Castiglione delle Stiviere entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Rome. In this act, he assumed the name of Luiz Gonzaga, renounced his title of nobility and the inheritance to which he was entitled. His master at that time was São Roberto Belarmino. Luis Gonzaga left his noble origins aside, always choosing the most humble services. For reasons of study, St. Louis Gonzaga had to go to Rome in the year 1590. Upon arriving there, he came across the victims of a contagious disease called typhus. Seeing the suffering of the people, he felt so compassionate that he started to help the sick. After taking care of the sick for as long as he could, he himself contracted the disease and died on June 21, 1591. São Luís Gonzaga was only 23 years old and gave his life in favor of charity and purity of heart. For this reason, São Luís Gonzaga is the patron of youth and students. His remains were buried in the Church of St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit order, in Rome.
