It is an image that “speaks” by the power of artistic expression. In the image, Our Lady is with her Son Jesus dead in her arms. It refers to a very specific moment of pain and suffering, right after Jesus’ death on the cross. The image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade contains a profound theology. Jesus, dead, just come down from the cross, in his mother’s arms. It portrays the sacrifice of salvation made by Jesus and Mary as a corridor, accompanying her son until the end. It portrays the pain of the Mother who, aware of her mission, offers her son for the salvation of humanity. It also represents the pain of millions of mothers who suffer for their children, victims of all kinds of suffering.
