Santa Tereza nasceu no dia 2 de janeiro de 1873 em Alençom, baixa Normandia, na França. Terezinha ficou muito doente causando grande preocupação em seu pai e irmãs. Um dia, porém, olhando para a imagem da Imaculada Conceição de Maria, de quem seus pais eram devotos, a Virgem sorriu para Terezinha e esta ficou curada. Desse dia em diante, Terezinha decidiu entrar para o Carmelo, mas como tinha apenas 14 anos, não poderia, por causa das regras da Igreja. Mesmo assim ela não desistiu e numa viagem feita à Itália, teve a audácia de pedir autorização ao Papa Leão Xlll e este a concedeu. Assim, em abril de 1888 ela entra para o Carmelo fazendo sua profissão religiosa em setembro de 1890, festa da Natividade da Virgem Maria, acrescentando em seu nome, Tereza do Menino Jesus e Sagrada Face.
Antes de ser canonizada Santa Tereza do Menino Jesus foi beatificada em abril de 1923. Sua canonização foi feita pelo Papa Pio Xl, em 1925 no dia 17 de maio. No ano de 1927 foi declarada Patrona Universal das Missões Católicas. Foi nomeada Padroeira Secundária da França, junto com Santa Joana D’arc. Em 1997 no centenário de sua morte, o Papa João Paulo ll, na Carta Apostólica, Divinis Amoris Scientia, a declara Doutora da Igreja por causa da sua mensagem da Infância Espiritual e da Contemplação da Face de Cristo. Seus pais, Luis Martin e Zélia Guerin, foram beatificados pela Igreja, no ano de 2008, no dia Mundial das Missões, na basílica de Lisieux, dedicada a Santa Terezinha.
O dia Primeiro de outubro é dedicado a Santa Terezinha do Menino Jesus. Por sua história, a devoção a Santa Terezinha do Menino Jesus é a devoção ao amor. Também é a devoção da Pequena Via que, através das coisas simples da vida, leva-nos para o céu. A devoção a Santa Terezinha nos leva à oração profunda, à verdadeira intimidade com Deus, é a devoção de quem alcança grande maturidade espiritual quando se lê sua autobiografia intitulada “História de uma alma”. Livro que ela só escreveu porque recebeu ordem de sua superiora para fazê-lo. Este livro tem transformado vidas desde que foi publicado.
No Museu de Arte Sacra de Mato Grosso, não temos uma imagem de Santa Teresinha, pois ela se perdeu com o tempo. Porém no Museu se encontra o retábulo que foi feito dedicado a Santa Terezinha. Este retábulo em estilo Barroco-rococó do século XVIII ficava encostado na parede esquerda da única nave da Antiga igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá, e é um testemunho da tradicional devoção que o povo cuiabano dedica a Santa Terezinha e que se mantém até os dia de hoje. Atualmente, uma outra imagem de Santa Terezinha encontra-se a direita do altar central da Nova Catedral do Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá.

Do you know Saint Terezinha of Child Jesus?
Saint Tereza was born on January 2, 1873 in Alençom, lower Normandy, France. Terezinha became very ill, causing great concern in her father and sisters. Before Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus was canonized, she was beatified in April 1923. Her canonization was carried out by Pope Pius XI in 1925 on 17 May. In 1927 she was declared Universal Patron of Catholic Missions. She was named Secondary Patroness of France, along with Saint Joan D’arc. In 1997, on the centenary of his death, Pope John Paul II, in the Apostolic Letter, Divinis Amoris Scientia, declares her Doctor of the Church because of her message of Spiritual Childhood and the Contemplation of the Face of Christ. His parents, Luis Martin and Zélia Guerin, were beatified by the Church in 2008, on World Missions Day, in the basilica of Lisieux, dedicated to Saint Teresa.

At the Museum of Sacred Art of Mato Grosso, we do not have an image of Santa Teresinha, as it has been lost over time. However, in the Museum there is an altarpiece that was dedicated to Santa Terezinha. This 18th-century Baroque-Rococo altarpiece was leaning against the left wall of the only nave of the Old Church of Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá, and is a testament to the traditional devotion that the people of Cuiabano dedicate to Santa Terezinha and that continues until the of today. Currently, another image of Santa Terezinha is to the right of the central altar of the New Cathedral of Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá.
