Dados Históricos: O Missal Romano é o livro usado nas missas de rito romano para as leituras próprias do celebrante (um clérigo). Ele contém vários tipos de orações eucarísticas. A reforma mais recente dos textos do missal, aconteceu durante e após o Concílio Vaticano II, onde o papa Paulo VI, através Constituição Apostólica Missale Romanum, promulgou a mesma. O Papa João Paulo II promulgou, em 2002, a terceira edição típica do novo Missal Romano, que ainda não foi traduzida para o português. Antes da promulgação do Missal Romano ex decreto sacrosancti Oecumenici Concilii Vaticani II instauratum, as edições do Missal Romano tinham a indicação ex decreto sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, e indicaram como celebrar a chamada Missa tridentina. Nas circunstâncias indicadas no motu proprio Summorum Pontificum ainda permite-se celebrar a Missa de acordo com a última edição do Missal Romano tridentino (1962) “como forma extraordinária da Liturgia da Igreja”. A Missa do Vaticano II é a forma ordinária ou normal da celebração da Missa no rito romano.

Historical Data: The Roman Missal is the book used in the masses of Roman rite for the readings proper to the celebrant (a cleric). It contains various types of Eucharistic prayers. The most recent reform of the missal texts took place during and after the Second Vatican Council, where Pope Paul VI, through the Apostolic Constitution Missale Romanum, promulgated the same. In 2002, Pope John Paul II promulgated the third typical edition of the new Roman Missal, which has not yet been translated into Portuguese. Before the promulgation of the Roman Missal ex decreto sacrosancti Oecumenici Concilii Vaticani II instauratum, the editions of the Roman Missal had the indication ex decreto sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, and indicated how to celebrate the so-called Tridentine Mass. In the circumstances indicated in the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum it is still possible to celebrate Mass according to the latest edition of the Tridentine Roman Missal (1962) “as an extraordinary form of the Church’s Liturgy”. Vatican II Mass is the ordinary or normal form of the celebration of the Mass in the Roman rite.
