Dados Históricos: São João Batista nasceu milagrosamente em Aim Karim, cidade de Israel que fica a 6 quilômetros do centro de Jerusalém. Seu pai era um sacerdote do templo de Jerusalém chamado Zacarias. Sua mãe foi Santa Isabel, que era prima de Maria Mãe de Jesus, era idosa e nunca tinha engravidado, todos a tinham como estéril. Mas, então, o anjo Gabriel apareceu a Zacarias quando este prestava seu serviço de sacerdote no templo e anunciou que Isabel teria um filho e que este deveria se chamar João. Zacarias não acreditou e ficou mudo. Pouco tempo depois, Isabel engravidou como o Anjo havia dito. São João Batista foi consagrado a Deus desde o ventre materno. Em sua missão de adulto, ele pregou a conversão e o arrependimento dos pecados manifestos através do batismo. João batizava o povo. Daí o nome João Batista, ou seja, João, aquele que batiza. O batismo de João Batista era um “batismo de arrependimento”, em preparação para a missão do Messias; quem o recebesse devia se reconhecer pecador diante de Deus e se arrepender.

Historical Data: Saint John the Baptist was miraculously born in Aim Karim, a city in Israel that is 6 kilometers from the center of Jerusalem. His father was a priest in the Jerusalem temple called Zechariah. Her mother was Santa Isabel, who was cousin of Maria Mãe de Jesus, was elderly and had never become pregnant, everyone considered her sterile. But then, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah when he was serving as a priest in the temple and announced that Elizabeth would have a son and that he should be called John. Zechariah did not believe and was speechless. Shortly thereafter, Isabel became pregnant as the Angel had said. Saint John the Baptist was consecrated to God from his mother’s womb. On his adult mission, he preached the conversion and repentance of sins manifested through baptism. John baptized the people. Hence the name John the Baptist, that is, John, the one who baptizes. John the Baptist’s baptism was a “baptism of repentance” in preparation for the Messiah’s mission; whoever received it must recognize himself as a sinner before God and repent.
